Holiday Cottage Surroundings

Nestling under the North Pennine escarpment, the Old Smithy sits in a rich and varied landscape. It is worth spending some time exploring your surroundings...

Lacy's Caves, Eden Valley

From the doorstep, you can explore the local fields, woods, streams (known as becks locally) fells and hills. The Pennine Way passes very close by as it heads from the village of Dufton to the highest point in the Pennines (Cross Fell) - on its way, it passes over an ancient clapper bridge and into what David Bellamy has described as "England's last wilderness". Just beyond the Way is one of a series of conical hills known as pikes, this one is Dufton Pike (seen from the Pennine Way above, and from the rear left). A short and stiff walk rewards you with excellent views of the surrounding area, the Pennines behind and across the valley to the Lake District mountains. The two views below were taken from the summit.

High Cup Gill

The Farm includes a "Site of Special Scientific Interest" (SSSI), due to the ancient woodland found there. This is no more than 5 minutes walk from the house. If you have a mountain bike, there are also plenty of routes to challenge all abilities, included a gentle ride down to the local pub! (at Dufton).

Long Meg & her daughters

If you have children, they will be able to play and explore in safety (the nearest public road is nearly half a mile away, and it's hardly busy!). Why not take the opportunity to investigate the rich flora and fauna in the area? Learning to recognise the numerous varieties of wild flowers, trees and birds will add greatly to your enjoyment of the area.

The owners will be more than happy to recommend local walks and activities.

But, in the end, you might prefer to put your feet up rather than one in front of the other...
